Taketomi is a serene island located in the Okinawa Prefecture of Japan. Noted for its traditional Okinawan houses and preserved Ryukyuan heritage, it offers a tranquil atmosphere far from bustling urban life.
Given the small size of the island, renting a compact or economy car is recommended. Parking lots are available at the ferry terminal and most popular sites. A speed limit of 40 km/h applies throughout the island, except for certain areas where the limit is 20 km/h. Please note that driving is on the left side of the road, in line with the rest of Japan.
If you'd like to ride a bike around the island - it's the local way of getting around. So, consider including a bike rack as a rental car feature.
Taketomi Island is made up of only one village, also named Taketomi. The village is home to a few hundred residents and gives a glimpse into the slow-paced, traditional Okinawan lifestyle.
Taketomi enjoys a heavenly subtropical climate, making it a pleasant destination almost throughout the year. The island showcases the traditional Ryukyu culture through various seasonal events. One of the most celebrated events is the annual Taketomi Mura Matsuri festival in November, where traditional folk performances, parades, and music bring the village to life.
The currency used is the Japanese Yen (¥). Major credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger establishments, but you might need cash at smaller venues and for transport fares.
Although the island doesn't have an airport, the nearby Ishigaki Airport, which is just a short ferry ride away, connects Taketomi with other parts of Japan.
Remember to adhere to speed limits and traffic rules as you explore this paradise in your car. Get ready to immerse yourself in enchanting folklore, pristine beaches, and a captivating culture. Enjoy your journey through Taketomi!
