Located on the eastern coast of the Rif Mountains, Melilla is a Spanish autonomous city on the north coast of Africa. Surrounded on land by Morocco, it is one of only two permanently inhabited Spanish cities in mainland Africa. With its unique blend of Spanish and Moroccan architecture, stunning beaches, and year-round Mediterranean climate, Melilla offers countless opportunities for explorers and sun-seekers alike.
Melilla Airport (MLN) is situated to the south-west of the city, offering excellent transportation links for visitors. The airport is domestic, serving Spanish cities including Madrid, Malaga and Granada. As an English speaker, you'll have no issue navigating the airport as English signage is available throughout.
Several top car rental companies have stations right at the airport, providing an array of rental options from economy cars to luxury SUVs. With a car rental, Melilla's notable spots are all just a drive away.
We recommend opting for a small or mid-size car as they are well-suited for Melilla's fairly narrow city streets and easier to park. However, if you're planning on exploring the surrounding regions, an SUV might be a better choice to handle difficult terrains.
There are several gas stations near the airport and around the city so you can easily refuel before returning your rental.
The main route from the airport into the center of Melilla is via Autovia De Circunvalacion which roughly takes 10-15 minutes. The roads are well-signposted and traffic is relatively light.
If car rental isn't your thing, there's also the option of using public transportation. Buses run regularly from the airport to various points around the city.
The official currency is the Euro, used across Spain. As for the climate, Melilla enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers, perfect for outdoor activities.
Melilla is surrounded by several Moroccan cities that you can visit for a day trip. While driving across the border is not possible, the city of Nador is just a short ferry ride away.
Don't forget to visit the old city walls, the Plaza of Spain and the Central Market of Melilla during your stay!
Enjoy your stay in Melilla, and here's to the journey of a lifetime. Safe travels!
