Serving as the main international gateway of the Cook Islands, Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) is located in the township of Avarua—the largest town and the national capital. The airport is less than 3 kilometre away from the town centre and is next to the shores of the Pacific offering stunning ocean views.
Right at the airport, you can find several car rental providers to cater to your mobility needs. Notably, these include Avis, Europcar, and Island Car & Bike Hire. Rentals include a range of vehicles, with compact, economy, and midsize options, suitable for different numbers of travellers and budget.
In the Cook Islands, you'll drive on the left-hand side of the road. Moreover, it's important to remember that the maximum speed limit in most areas is 50km/hr and slowing down in villages. Plus, your overseas driving licence may not be enough—you might need to get a Cook Islands driving licence which costs around NZD $20 and can be obtained from the local Police Headquarters in Avarua.
There are a couple of petrol stations near the airport like the On The Spot Rarotonga and the Mobil Oil Cook Islands Ltd. And with most points of interest within 15 km of the airport, you won't be caught on low gas.
The Cook Islands have a tropical rainforest climate, remaining pleasantly warm throughout the year. Do be prepared for sudden rain showers, though these are usually short-lived and often followed by beautiful rainbows.
The Cook Islands use the New Zealand Dollar, but also have their own currency: the Cook Islands Dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted in most places, and there are ATM's in Avarua if you need to withdraw cash.
With your rental car, you'll be able to explore beyond Avarua and get to know more of the Rarotonga island. Arorangi is just a 20-minute drive west from the airport. Known for its churches, restaurants, and cafes, the town is popular for sunset lovers. You can also head east for 17km to reach Muri Beach, an iconic white sandy beach perfect for snorkelling and paddle boarding.
Discovering the Cook Islands has never been easier. Enjoy the drive and let the adventure begin!
